painful melancholy

themusicalprimate

I really liked this album at first, the songs are long, melodic, droning. But, they are as depressing as hell and I can barely listen to music like that. Too somber by a half for me, and I really like most melancholy music, too.

For getting great praises on here and itunes, I was expecting something more. This is just nothing to me. Nothing.

Did nothing for me

This is a rare event. It's the first time i've actually deleted tracks i've downloaded from emusic (2 years sub). I did give it a chance. I listen to a LOT of varied music and this just didn't work AT ALL for me, vocally, melodically, atmospherically, structurally. I wanted it to grow on me, but it hasn't. Sorry.

Great!

Broughton is completely his own amazingly heart-felt sound. But in the process he conjures up Skip Spence, Jandek, and Frusciante, mixing startling lyrics with a sense of space and duration. Emusic: get us his new(old) album!

a five song gem

jerkameleon

This album just knocked me flat, with reminders of Songs: Ohia, Chris Bathgate, and a voice that would give Antony Hegarty a run for his money. This album was recorded in one take in a church in Leeds (you even get the church bells at one point), everything played by DTB and looped to create incredible multi-layered songs. "Execution" sounds incredibly sincere, even with the shockingly blunt lyrical content of the song. And hell, it's five tracks of sprawling folk goodness. Definitely worth the downloads.

Plug Research Records Radio

By Plug Research Records, eMusic Contributor

Based in Los Angeles, CA, Plug Research Music was founded in 1994 as a way to release 12" singles. The label quickly grew away from being a single driven label and became home to an impressive collection of musicians that were pushing the boundaries of sound. Some of the early releases included classic releases by Dntel, Daedelus, the debut release for Flying Lotus, Mia Doi Todd and Milosh to name a few. Eighteen years later,… more »
