One of my all time favourite LPD albums ! However, tracks 9 - 12 was originally released as a 12" vinyl EP called Princess Coldheart, and is not a part of the original version and does not IMO match the brilliance of CVA

This was my introduction to the Pink Dots, and oddly enough, it managed to be one of my favorite albums even when I listened primarily to hardcore. Well, I don't listen to hardcore much anymore, but I have rediscovered LPD. The Dots can't be pinned down to any single genre...neo-psychedelia, goth, electronica, synth-pop, industrial, drone-folk, and more...it's all there in one great atmospheric hodge-podge. Brilliant if cryptic lyrics and tons of ambience. Crushed Velvet Apocalypse is the perfect album for listening to alone and in the dark. Dragons walked the earth again and paraffin was free. A fire-eater went insane and torched the final tree. Then one fine day, the planet crumbled, just 'cuz someone sneezed...
This has my vote as Pink Dots best album. I love JUST A LIFETIME, DEATH OF JACK THE RIPPER, and my personl favorite NEW TOMORROW. This was the first cd that I bought of the PD's and it still is my favorite. I wish there was e-music back then because I bought an import at 25.00. This is why e-music is so terrific.
The Pink Dots have been one of the most prolific bands of the last twenty five years - this impressive catalog here represents only about half of their output as they have recorded for a gazillion different labels. Generally CDDB will bring up the genre as "Experimental" which says much of what you need to know. But when the Pink Dots are accidentally accessible, they can be simply brilliant. This is not their best record top to bottom, but does have "Just a Lifetime", which is one of the best songs ever written by anyone. To duplicate my own experience, download it, love it and then try to wade through all the rest of their stuff to see if they can do it again. At least eMusic has them now, making the task easier.
