Groundhog minute

Masanga

Well, he's got a point of sorts, though one that could have been made better by listening with human ears and a wristwatch: this is actually a 65-second piece on a loop, and I could sympathise with the view that you might expect a bit more from someone of Roach's calibre. But they're probably the finest 65 seconds he's ever created, and the sequelish A Deeper Silence is even shorter (and also wonderful). No keyboard noodling, though; what you're hearing is, amazingly, a solo guitar album.

Spectral analysis? Give it a rest.

De gustibus non est disputandum means “There’s no accounting for taste” in case anyone was wondering WTF the pompous smeghead was blathering on about. Spectral analysis? Give it a rest. There's one song here - it's practically free, and still they complain.

Filler In Spaaaace

JRandomBystander

Spectral analysis says this album contains essentially no data above 11 KHz. Playing it back at double speed tends to confirm my suspicion that it consists of twenty or thirty minutes of keyboard noodlngs stretched to 74 minutes and drenched in reverb to cover the graininess of the result. Still, de gustibus non est disputandum.

Wow!

Mazmus

I received a questionnaire from e-music a coupla weeks ago. One of the questions was 'how long do you intend to stay with emusic?' or something like that. On the basis that I've had to add Steve Roach to my list of 'gotta haves' looks like it's gonna be a very long time! Now, to be honest, a 73 minute track wouldn't usually work for me, I mean how can you keep someones interest for that long on one track without getting repetitious? Dunno, don't care - I can listen to this back to back and then wish I had time to listen to it again. Maybe for some it would be repetitious, but not for this happy camper. The music is stark, moody and distant but the images of isolation and emptiness it conjures up are magnificent. I love this, and let's be honest, for 1 poxy download..??, go on, seriously, you'd be mad not to. Go on, dive in!

Dark enough for me...

patchwork cat

While this beast may not be 'dark ambient' (it's kind of 'space'), it does consist of minor harmonies, discords and the odd groaning noise (!) Great piece but I wouldn't like to hear it in a dark room! Do try 'Slow Heat' too. This piece is warm and dreamy- a recording of reptiles and insects outside Steve's place with gentle synths.

Positive Shades

Returning

Despite the title of this work it is not so much 'dark' as 'shaded'. The chord qualities are actually quite positive and give the piece a distinctly sweet vibe. This I like. If you want dark ambient check out something like Lull 'cold summer'. This is a lot more wholesome and unfolds beautifully into a resolved atmosphere. Recommended.

Space Music

By Mark Richardson, eMusic Contributor

The first true "space music" was found on a gold LP record sent hurtling beyond the solar system in 1977 aboard the Voyager Space Probe. The record, curated by a team led by astronomer Carl Sagan, contained images of the Earth and its people, greetings in 55 languages, and music selections including Bach, Chuck Berry and Javanese gamelan. No reviews yet from any extraterrestrials. The genesis of the very loose music genre sometimes called "space music"… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Darkest Before Dawn is a long-form composition that is meant for continuous play. It is from Steve Roach, a master of that technique. His activity that preceded this CD had been electro-tribal and experimental, with forays into some forms of rhythmic ambience and classic space music. The title of this disc says it all. This is dark, sinister minimalism as — and this is a reminder — only Roach can do it. This is serious space music with no grooves, no fractals, and no percussion. The atmosphere does have its own rhythm and its own pace. The continuous form is the soundscape; there are no breaks or interruptions. This is a marvelous work and is destined to become a classic of the genre. For now, it rates as excellent, but time will earn it a “best of genre” rating. While this piece is unique, Roach has performed dark ambience before — The Magnificent Void and Structures From Silence are classics of the style. He has also created several continuous-play pieces that work well on multi-disc units in shuffle and continuous modes. That would make for a fairly adventurous day — a dozen Steve Roach CDs on continuous shuffle play. – Jim Brenholts
