Really enjoyed it.
I like the music - kind of moody. As far as categorizing it, my untrained and skeptic ear calls it English/Irish soundtrack music.
Refreshingly original medieval folk music. Horse Brawl have injected a new verve into the familiar with their revisioning of medieval and folk themes. Highly recommended to anyone seeking something different and unique. I urge Emusic to upload the other Horse's Brawl album, DINDIRIN as it is even better than this one.
Truly exciting and invigorating (in the best sense of the word) collection of ancient tunes given a ferocious reworking by a talented duo of multi-instrumentalists. Stand out tracks are "Mofo" and "Douce Dame". Also worth a listen is the 14th Century Italian hopping dance tune "Stampanasa". And when are we getting the new CD "Dindirin" on eMusic? Not soon enough for my liking.
I've seen music reviewed which claims to 'transcend genres' or similar. Usually that means it's such rubbish that you don't know which garbage bin to put it in! This stuff is fascinating, but equally difficult to categorise. Is it folk? Yes. Is it rennaisance or even mediaeval? Yes again. Their web-site (http://www.horsesbrawl.co.uk) describes them as "Part folk - part early - part trained precision - part wild abandon" and that's about as close as you get. It's all acoustic, but what a range of instruments and sounds are produced. The beats, rhythms, and syncopation are exact and almost military, but the spirit behind them is loose and fun-loving. Many of these tracks are of dance origin - gavottes, jigs, branles (or brawls) - and stem from all over Europe - Romanian, French, English, Spanish. There's an energy and vitality the whole way through this album which demands that you play it loud. Highly recommended, - a splash of water to re-invigorate your musical tastebuds.
