Taking a magpie approach to genre
1997 | Label: kranky / Iris

Some of Kranky's acts are as indefinable as the label itself, a fact perfectly illustrated by the loose-knit AMP. Based around the core of British duo Richard Walker and Karine Chaff, the band evolved rapidly through experimental rock styles until this album, made in collaboration with Robert Hampson of Loop/Main and beat programmer Olivier Gauthier, which takes a magpie approach to genre. From the Sonic Youth guitar clang of "You are Here" to crystalline piano pieces like "Songe" and "Just-Ice," meandering analogue synth trickles to dubbed-out breakbeats, abstract drones to practically jaunty songs, Stenorette pulls together dozens of disparate elements — yet they never feel chosen arbitrarily just for the sake of diversity. That it avoids sounding like some kooky postmodern collage is impressive; that it shows a coherent and compelling personality of its own is little short of a miracle.

eMusic Guide to Kranky Records

By Joe Muggs

Kranky's great skill is escapology; it's practically defined by its ability to evade definition. If there is received wisdom about the Chicago label, it's as a home for abstracted guitars, moody soundscapes and occasionally spiky electronic beats: all very serious, very studious, very intense. Maybe when Bruce Adams and Joel Leoschke founded it in 1993, it could have been pegged as an indie label that tended toward the experimental — but with each release it… more »

They Say All Media Guide

After their highly acclaimed Kranky debut, Astralmoonbeamprojections, and their blissful second release, Perceptions, on Darla Records, Amp continues to bridge the gap between ambient guitar rock and trance electronica. With a maelstrom of staccato percussion, sheets of distorted guitar washes and haunting vocals, Stenorette is yet another successful display of auditory experimentalism and the joy of noise by the British duo of Richard Walker and Karine Charff. The songs here range from the subdued piano-driven softness of “Songe” to the menacing whirl of “Zoe,” but the entire album is a celebration of sonic sensory overload. Not immediately accessible on the first listen, each track is held together with either a thin thread of melody, an infectious groove, or tightly reined chaos. Amp’s hidden beauty becomes more apparent each time through. – Matthew Hilburn
