Funky bass lines or flailing mandolins, they're all shooting for the same transcendence.
2001 | Label: Euterpe Musica Edizioni / The Orchard

In Southern Italy it was once believed that the only way to survive the bite of the tarantula was to dance yourself into a state of ecstasy. Or maybe it wasn't — it might just have been a way around the Church's ban on dancing. Whatever the real reason, the music of the tarantella has the same earthy, pagan intensity as the dance, whether it's in the wild, inspired madness of Lino Cannavacciuolo (sounding like Tom Waits after several bad nights on the grappa), the woozy roots psychedelia of Peppe Barra, or the softness of Tarantula Rubra Ensemble. The varied approaches don't matter, just as the origin of the tarantella is ultimately unimportant. Funky bass lines or flailing mandolins, they're all shooting for the same transcendence.

Great Sample of Italian Artists

YurtMusic

I'd been looking for an introduction to Italian music based more on the folk tradition and less on singers of dramatic songs. I enjoy all of the selections on this collection, but it also led me to search out several artists to hear more - Quartaumentata, Cantodiscanto, and Lino Cannavacciuolo - and now I have a trail to follow toward more good Italian music.

Gypsy Witch Music from Italy

SOULJAH-21

Makes you feel like you are in some enchanted forest dancing around a fire. Theres not too many tarantella artists, because most of the witches from italy (that used to use this music for healing and trance) where all killed. Here is a good example of tarantella. check out track- "Psyche - Phaleg".
