A Poor Record

varioslivros

This record is not good at all. Dio's vocals are not sounding as they did before, and the guitarrist is TERRIBLY bad. Don't download it.

Dio Rocks

brianebreslin

Dio still rocks. Buy this it's class. Just been to see him with heavon & hell. The wee man has still got it. Not many guys his age still have a great metal voice. U go wee man!!

at least CGoldy wasn`t there

Guitarrock

Doug Aldrich may not be as inventive as Tracy G, but at least we are spared Craig Goldy`s noodling in this live rendition of the little great man of Metal. Sound is half as good as live inferno (download that one instead and stand in awe at the production/Tracy G`s solo)...

Fair Enough

I was luckily enough to attend this amazing show. I had a ball, but would agree with both Runicen and Powderfinger - this download doesn't really do justice to an amazing artist, brilliant album and a great gig. But once you've stopped comparing it to the original recordings it's an enjoyable performance - and at the very least passes the time before the 'Heaven & Hell' tour next year (fingers crossed!).

Sadly, Ronnie James Dio shows his age.

Powderfinger

Though Holy Diver is amongst my favorite albums this live version is recorded about 10 years too late. The guitarist Doug Aldrich is amazing and plays the parts perfectly but sadly, Dio's voice is toast on this one. Also, the guitars are tuned down a whole step, presumably to compensate for Dio's decreased vocal range. Because of this the song's sound slow and plodding. Disc 2 is the better of the two IMHO. The Holy Diver tunes just don't sound that great detuned but the rest of the set does sound pretty good to be honest. Dio himself said in an interview buy the DVD movie of this concert he apparently didn't want this released as a CD "it was a record company decision, buy the dvd". I'd buy any other live Dio but this one sadly. "Evil or Devine" or "Last in Live" etc...

Great Performance

Runicen

The man shows a little wear around the edges, with the pipes gritting over a little rust from song to song. That said, for a man of his age, Dio blasts out the old favorites like it was divine calling. There's great energy and crowd rapport on this recording, with Dio himself appearing to love every minute of it. His voice is more rough than one might expect, but he pulls off every song with gusto and there are no off moments to speak of. If you want to hear a metal great in action, download this one.

They Say All Media Guide

Ronnie James Dio has issued quite a few live albums and videos since departing from Black Sabbath in the early ’80s, but as evidenced by its title, 2006′s Holy Diver Live is a bit different. Keeping in step with a phenomenon started in the ’90s with veteran rock acts performing a classic album in its entirety, Dio revisited his 1983 solo debut, Holy Diver. Recorded at the Astoria in London on October 22, 2005 (not 1995, as the CD booklet erroneously lists), the double-disc set also includes a second disc comprised of highlights from Dio’s Rainbow and Black Sabbath days, as well as a pair of tracks from another strong early solo release, 1984′s The Last in Line. Dio is in fine voice all these years later (something that can certainly not be said of the majority of rock singers his age who have to rely on backing vocalists or prerecorded tapes), as evidenced by such standouts as “Rainbow in the Dark,” “Holy Diver,” “Heaven and Hell,” and “Tarot Woman.” And headbangers worldwide have to be happy whenever the woefully underrated Dio/Sabbath-era gem “Sign of the Southern Cross” gets an airing on-stage. Despite guitarist Craig Goldy not performing on this night (due to an arm injury, Doug Aldrich took his place), Holy Diver Live is quite possibly Dio’s finest live album yet — from both a performance and set-list standpoint. – Greg Prato
