The second release by this Austin, Texas, group is a refreshing change of pace from the monochromatic sounds of most newgazers. Alternately noisy and disjointed and smooth and tranquil, Love for the Last Time is in exercise in contrasts, reflecting the skewed vision of a band that takes as much pleasure in taking things apart as putting them together. Time and again, Experimental Aircraft revel in the serenity of girly vocals, swirling melodies and tender hooks only to swoop down and tear it all up with swaths of dissonance. Whether the band's sentimental expressions are at odds with their physical impulses or they just want to incorporate everything they love — Sonic Youth, Galaxie 500, Slowdive, Sebadoh — into a single musical expression, one thing's for sure; Love for the Last Time is like nothing you've ever heard.
