I like it

TheBirtles

Mixed feelings, "Paul Simon" is great! "BlackHand" & "faster than you go" are good, but "perfect sound" was a let-down for me. Tmight be the type of tunes you have to hear 3-5 times before you know if you like them or not. 4 stars

eh.

DEW1010

tracks one and two are a little grating but three and four are worth the download time.

scratchy

wns3

I like the song Perfect Sound Always by Girlsareshort. It kills me when artist take digital tracks and make them sound like an old scratchy 78RPM recording. I can't see how it helps the song. I grew up having to listen to old scratchy records. I don't miss it. Maybe it's for the benefit of the younger generation. Let's them hear recorded music the way I did. Whatever.

yeah, black hand

rosbeth

i don't like much new rap. but black hand is sweet.

Black Hand!

ElNegroMagnifico

Don't front on the Cadence track. The UC roster is diverse, so Cadence holds down the rap shit. And very well, I might add.

err... what?

BugleBoy2

is it just me, or does track 2 seem a bit out of place? russian futurists and cansecos were good

perfect sound always

I cannot stop listening to this Girlsareshort track. The Russian Futurists one is pretty good too. "Faster Than You Go" is decent, and skip the other one.

What do you want... it's free.

I already had track 4 ("Perfect Sound Always" by Girlsareshort) from a previous compilation... If you haven't heard it, it's worth the free download. The other three tracks are so-so.

They Say All Music Guide

Matthew Hart’s third album as the Russian Futurists, Our Thickness offers more of his bedroom-recorded symphonic pop, albeit with a little more focus and polish than his earlier work had. Hart’s way with pop melodies and intricate, largely electronic arrangements have drawn fairly accurate comparisons to Magnetic Fields, but the Russian Futurists’ music is even more similar to the work of Rob Crow’s Optiganally Yours project; both feature quirky yet oddly elegant arrangements and sweet, boyish vocals. Not that Hart’s music is derivative — after all, not too many songs feature swanky pianos and honking Canadian geese, but “Our Pen’s Out of Ink” begins with both. The Russian Futurists’ music is bigger and lusher than that of Hart’s most easily recognizable influences; in fact, his productions and arrangements are so expansive and detailed that they tend to overwhelm his songs, at least on the first few listens. Hart’s vocals are often buried under layers and layers of other sounds, which adds to Our Thickness’ blurry, impressionistic feeling. It’s an undeniably pretty sound, particularly on “Why You Gotta Do That Thing?” and “Sentiments vs. Syllables,” but sometimes it makes Our Thickness a little distant to embrace initially. The slightly more down-to-earth tracks, such as “Paul Simon” and “Incandescent Hearts” are more immediate but still plenty atmospheric, suggesting a cuter, quirkier spin on the Postal Service’s breezy indie electronica. There’s also an AM pop quality to Hart’s songs — you can hear bits and pieces of forgotten ’60s and ’70s bubblegum pop hits in all of his songs, and especially on “Hurtin’ 4 Certain” and “2 Dots on a Map,” both of which sound utterly fresh and naggingly familiar at the same time. Homespun creativity has rarely sounded bigger — or better — than it does on Our Thickness. – Heather Phares
