If you like bluegrass... you'll like this

Tune_Mogul

If you like Van Halen... you might not. I have an ecletic musical interest that includes a wide range of acoustical compositions and I also listen to rock, metal and even some country. I like both David Lee Roth and Sammy... so knowing all that, I was very impressed with the songs. Knowing the songs so well and hearing them in this raw acousitc style was a treat and a surprise. But then I like surprises. Will I tune this in for all day play-fest? Probably not. But there are a couple gems if you are looking for a few singles. "Jump" was cool, especially since David Lee Roth was singing (Interesting to hear the bluegrass version with his vocals) and "Ice Cream Man" was great. I love that song! Those two songs made it into one of my most played playlists. Anyway... that's my thoughts. I think the rather harsh comments from the two reviewers just ahead of me were a little short sided. Perhaps they just don't like bluegrass and in that case shouldn't be reviewing the album. It's a bluegrass

This is what a tribute should be. It highlights the best of both the original artist and the artists covering the songs. It's almost as if the songs were written for bluegrass (Unchained, Runnin' with the devil, Ain't talkin' about love). And then there's Eruption! If you like VH or bluegras download this.

Excellent Tribute

One thing I can't stand is people who see the words BLUEGRASS and TRIBUTE behind the name of their favorite rock band and then listen to it, expecting to hear their favorite band. Duh. Listen, if you don't like bluegrass then don't get this. If you like Van Halen and have an open mind for bluegrass music then pick this up. Personally I grew up on Van Halen and have never considered myself a bluegrass/country fan AT ALL, and I love this cd! The way the songs are adapted and covered is amazing. Some are slowed down considerably, which gives a little more emotion to the songs and I think you get a better feel for what David, Eddie and the boys were trying to say. If you can handle bluegrass, then just get it. Period.

Having grown up with these classic Van Halen songs, I'm really suprised at how much I like this collection. It's really clever how they retooled these songs to the bluegrass style. Love it.

They Say All Music Guide

There must be some kind of collectors’ appeal to the myriad of intricately packaged bluegrass tributes to rock bands, because like Beanie Babies, they just keep coming. One needs only to read the title Strummin with the Devil: The Bluegrass Tribute to Van Halen to imagine the experience, but there’s something “extra special” about this compilation. Not only do listeners get to realize their dream of hearing Eddie Van Halen’s “Eruption” played on a banjo, they also get legendary frontman David Lee Roth handling lead vocals on “Jump” and “Jamie’s Crying” — the latter has been turned into a waltz. Roth has always been game for self-parody (money), and he rises to the occasion, providing just enough ham to keep things in “DAVE TV”-land. There is little reason to go in depth here, as the genre is as predictable as it is perfectly executed, and depending on one’s tolerance for novelty, the results are either stupefyingly brilliant or harbingers of the end times. – James Christopher Monger
