This is rougher in recording values than later work by Adam Pierce. But evidence of his dubwisdom is apparent throughout. It's all solo instrumentation, too, as far as i know. But the compostions are wonderfully intricate and the instruments are masterfully played. "It's a joke, it's supposed to be funny," is more than a tongue in cheek vocal arrangement. It's a beautiful song. "Surprise!" is a pretty sick overdubbed break with disjointed malletwork and an identifiably Moog Rouge west coast whistle sliding in towards the middle. "In the Water..." is a dreamy blissed out piece of guitar harmonics with female vocals of an urban latina persuasion. Boodleybaye's overall sound reminds me a band that has been playing in your basement for a while and is getting really good. This is great instrumental post rock.

The one-man-band project of Adam Pierce, Mice Parade’s The True Meaning of Boodleybaye is a winsome piece of jagged D.I.Y. indie pop. Though the heavy drum kit and overall recording approaches the lowest of the lo-fi, Pierce floats a series of precious melodies over the top on tracks like “A Dance by Any Other Name” and “My Workday in May.” The impression is oddly similar to what an emo band might sound like if they tried to do their own version of electronica: halfway between Add N to X and Sunny Day Real Estate. – John Bush
