Fun Exotica

One of my most pleasant surprises on eMusic. "I'm In The Mood For Love" is one of my faves. Track #5 (part of the "Indecipherable" Suite) is also great.

Some people like me dig the musical style here described by other reviewers. I just don't think this has anything to with teens from China and Malaysia. Someone with a sense of humor came up with the album title and cover. Second, teens in those countries just don't listen to this kind of music.

If you like Tipsy, Messerchups... you'll enjoy this album - it's probably one of the best ez listening stuff on Emusic. A great soundtrack for a 70's B-movie, fab!

This is hilarious! It sounds like old karaoke backing tracks to me.

I feel like I should be watching a Tarantino movie when I listen to this album. I love it.

The cover picture says it all.

Remember when kids in the US and UK dressed like that? Well, here's the music they were listening to - with very few lyrics, and as interpreted by artists such as "Unknown" and "Man Chau Po Orchestra". Groovy. The tracks titled "Indecipherable" used chinese (or other) characters and e-music failed to display them or convert them. The song isn't actually called "Indecipherable". But that's a shame. I found "The Stylers" by Chella-La to be a bit addictive. But most of the songs are predictably forgettable.

Asia ???

The contents of the album Teen Dance Music From China and Malaysia were discovered in a brown paper bag in the dusty corner of a seldom-visited thrift store. Dozens of records, dating from the early sixties to the mid seventies, documenting the various psychedelic and go-go sounds that had the youth of the Far East convulsing on the dance floor, anonymously donated. What would Chairman Mao say? < (Addison MacDonald from dustedmagazine.com) anyway ... i like the characterisation of the music style ... i mean, nothing from asia ever sounded lesser from asia than this collection ... but it's a graet compilation and i really would love to drink at that party in china or where-ever

Don’t Forget (The Rest of) The Motor City

By John Morthland, eMusic Contributor

Everybody knows Motown was great, but few realize what an incubator the entire City of Detroit was for soul music in its heyday. For each artist on Berry Gordy’s label there were several more just as good who went with another major, or with a smaller, local indie. Some made their names in r&b, vocal groups or gospel before evolving into soul; others started in soul but had their greatest impact in funk. But even… more »

Rising Tide of Female Jazz Singers

By Dan Ouellette, eMusic Contributor

While the legendary voices of such jazz icons as Billie, Ella and Sarah still ring true, subsequent generations of female jazz vocalists have taken the music in new directions, especially in the '90s, ranging from Cassandra Wilson's new-standard caress to Diana Krall's classics with a twist. Taking their lead, young singers over the last decade have been swinging the vocal tradition onto a new plateau with a pop sensibility. In the mix are tunes by… more »

Townfolk Hip-Hop

By Tambi Younes, Label Relations Coordinator

Nirvana and Pearl Jam. This is who you'll hear about when the topic of Seattle's music scene is brought up in a historical context. It makes sense. Alternative music has always been the face of the Seattle scene. But before Kurt and Eddie, there was Ray and Quincy and Jimi. Seattle has soul, and the hip-hop community in the 206 is the living proof. They love their hometown and the music reflects that. "Townfolk Hip-Hop"… more »

Teenage Graceland

By Wayne Robins, eMusic Contributor

After Elvis went into the Army and before the British Invasion, the years 1958-63 were rock's forgotten years. But they were the years that shaped the musical tastes of baby boomers and of acts from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to Bruce Springsteen and the Ramones. Hear the dance sensations, the one-hit-wonders, the girl groups and doo-wop singers, surfers and rockabilly twangers, the birth of Motown, the evolution of R&B into soul and so much… more »
