Nothing "freak"ish here — this compilation from the reliable Tompkins Square label delivers track after stirring track of Fahey-esque finger-picking. There's not a vocal in sight, just soothing strums and angelic arpeggios. It's tempting to link the record to the resurgence of psych-folk, but there's nothing affected or self-consciously "arty" about Imaginational Anthems. It's simple songs simply played well; a silvery electric riff scampers across a blanket of acoustics in "Leaving the Apple" and Christina Carter skews and splits her tempos and melodies for the delightfully cockeyed "Ascend Mem". Highly recommended.
