I Like It

I appreciate MAO's care for the interpretation of this piece but I think he is a little misguided. I feel that this recording is beautiful. Just look at the rating on the top of the page. Much better than Wyn Morris's recording with the LSO on the same label. I am a clarinetist and the principal clarinet player on Wyn Morris's sounds really bad (especially for playing with the LSO) while the clarinetist here (I think it is Andrew Marriner) is really inspiring. Maybe that is why I really like this CD.

A lethargic, uninspiring 'Pastoral'

MAO

Much praise has been heaped upon Haitink's recent LSO Beethoven symphonies cycle. Generally, I'd agree that this praise is deserved. But in his unengaging interpretation of the Sixth Symphony, Haitink gives us the 'Achilles Heel' of this cycle. It sounds to me like little more than a run-through, punctuated all too infrequently by moments where I believed orchestra and conductor really cared about what they were playing. The issue for me with this account is that it's lacklustre in a way that suggests the performers are tired (or bored) of playing the work; and this lack of involvement on their part causes me to feel equally uninvolved. Better can be had from Davis with the Staatskapelle Dresden on Philips; or for something HIP, Gardiner with the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique on Archiv. As for Haitink's reading of the Second Symphony, it's a straightforward performance that does no real ill to this 'dowdy sister' among Beethoven's otherwise fine cycle of symphonies.
