The National are the greatest thing I have hear on Emusic. And this is the best ep they have done. A great accompanymnet to THe Boxer. All dolled up in straps, is a hauntingly beautiful love song.
"Boxer" is one of my all-time favorite albums, but "Cherry Tree" has my favorite National song "All The Wine," not their most technically interesting song, but I love it anyway. Other gems are "All Dolled Up In Straps" and "About Today."
I hate it when someone says "This band is the next %insert band name%." It demeans the original band, does a disservice to the new band by creating false expectations, and implies that nobody is original anymore. The National is not REM, and that's good for all parties involved. This album doesn't seem so great. I loved Boxer, but this is IMO some pretty boring stuff.
As with all music, enjoyment is subjective. But with vocal-led music this is especially true. If the voice of the lead singer irritates you, nothing in the album can be digested. If you enjoy a mumbling drawling dialect, this may be for you.
I must concur with the other reviews; there is so much beauty in this little group of songs. "About Today" was the first song I ever heard by The National, and it completely shattered me in that way that amazing music can do. "Wasp Nest" is another stand-out. The whole thing is nearly perfect!
I have listened to the national quite avidly for 2 years now and I keep coming back to this EP. About Today is perhaps my favorite, a tender song about death. They played 3 of the 7 tracks at their show in San Francisco while supporting Boxer. I hope everyone gets to have such beauty grace their ears.
This is SO good. I really liked boxer and alligator, and just decided to download this, and I think I like it better than the other two albums (which is saying ALOT). A great, great group of songs from a fantastic band.
Though a couple songs appear on their other equally superb LP's, the Cherry Tree EP, too, is a sum greater than its parts. Partly due to the understated, impeccably produced numbers like "Wasp Nest" and "All Dolled Up in Straps", and partly due to intense, cascading songs like "Cherry tree" (in which Berninger's whispered admonishment, "loose lips sink ships," grows into a searing conflagration...a furious castigation of a lover who has abnegated trust). The following track, "About Today", features Bryan Devendorf on drums, beating a wounded heartbeat in the dawn of the day after. Few bands, so mired as they are in the hubris of "music making", achieve the state of grace from which The National's music is borne.
This is a beautiful and moving EP. Every song is good. "All The Wine", "Cherry Tree", "Wasp Nest", and "All Dolled Up In Straps" are classic cuts from a great band.
