Ambling towards his 70s, this country singer-songwriter has rarely sounded better.
Label: Dualtone

The title of Workbench Songs — ¬the 11th studio album of Clark's three-decade career — offers an unimprovable idea of Clark's idea of himself: a craftsman, a worker, a toiler. As has often been the case with Clark, and possibly always the reason he has never quite accrued the popular recognition of a Kris Kristofferson, he is being too modest by half. The 11 songs here — nine Clark co-writes, one traditional, one cover of a tune by his longtime compadre, the late Townes Van Zandt — represent, at the risk of making Clark cringe, gleaming songwriting artistry.

Clark's exquisitely wrought country ballads usually contain many words, but not one of them is ever wasted. Like all great country songwriters, Clark excels at both the terse character sketch (of the heartbroken rodeo clown who stars in "Funny Bone," he mourns "Tears and greasepaint will not mix") and the deadpan punchline (on "Tornado Time in Texas," there's a master comedian's timing between "Now when pigs fly" and ". . . no, I mean really fly"). Clark's weatherbeaten growl delivers these against a backdrop of acoustic guitars, fiddles and mandolins, played by a cast of equally unassuming virtuosi.

I didn't like it

In my opinion, Guy Clark is one of the best songwriters alive today. Unfortunately, this album just isn't very good. While the cover of Townes Van Zandt's "no lonesome tune" is probably the best song on the album, it just feels like Guy's not really trying. Instead of downloading this album, I highly recommend that you find a copy of the excellent Dublin Blues. It's Guy Clark at his finest.

he's still got it

Average-Nights-Jack

Guy is a true legend of Texas singer/song writers and he can still cut the mustard with this latest release. Download and you will not be disappointed.

Routine Novelty

theoldprudesmusicreview

Guy Clark writes some mighty funny songs, but once the novelty wears off the music and voice can't sustain the most. You can't give up on the fellow though, because every now and then he hits the mark. Give a listen to find the ruby 'mongst the rocks.

Not due out til mid-September. Not sure how eMusic got it, but it's a GREAT new album from the master singer/songwriter. It's too bad there aren't more Guy Clark albums on here. If you are looking for a new singer/songwriter to tap into, this album is a good place to start. If you're a seasoned Clark fan, you already downloaded this album before you read the review.

Texas Cookin'=Good stuff

I rate this a 4.5. The first four songs--Walkin Man, Magdalene, Tornado Time, Funny Bone--all rank with his best IMO. The rest is not quite at the same level. Expose is catchy, but is a bit of a throwaway. Out in the Parking Lot and Cinco De Mayo are strong, however, if not exactly on par with the openers. Remaining tunes haven't struck me either way, yet, though that may change with further listenings. Card-carrying Guy fans should probably go ahead and get all the tracks; others may want to be more selective.

Amazing Collection of songs

SSchus87

Guy is the greatest songwriter alive (he should be, he learned from Townes..). This disc is a must have for any Guy fan. Probably not as good as Old No. 1, but still a great, great set.
