Soul Revival!

TikiMon

As if soul ever needed a revival. This album is absolutely magnificent soul as REAL and TIMELESS as it comes! Sharon Jones AND her Dap Kings are an utter national treasure which the USA should cherish. Wondrous.

maybe not good to compare to Amy Winehouse

EMUSIC-022ADD78

I was looking for tracks by Amy Winehouse. Since emusic doesn't have any, it directed me to this artist as someone else I might enjoy. I listened to several of the sample clips. This is what I will say..the Dap-Kings rock, of course. Sharon Jones ( who I had never heard before) has a strong, and very appealing voice, and one that's very good for this genre. However, I don't understand the negative comparisons being made here relative to Winehouse. I think Amy ( when she wasn't messed up with drugs, and hopefully will be clean again someday) has a very strong voice, and it's not inferior to that of Sharon Jones. More important to me, IMHO, Winehouse's songs are just more interesting, both melodically and lyrically. No disrespect to Ms. Jones.

This was also my first SJDK album, and it's still my favorite. I worked for Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings selling merch for their 100 Days 100 Nights US tour, and even after hearing each song every night for months, I still want to hear them again and again! Sharon's energy is mind-boggling, and I cannot recommend seeing her live enough!

This is the first Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings album I listened to. To put it simply, it's a superb album! It is a must have. This has some great tunes on it, both slow and fast jams. You can totally shake your groove tooshy to this album!

Ronson and Winehouse shamelessly used the Dap-Kings - unfortunately the hype overshadowed just how much more superior their original singer was to the Ronson version. Sharon Jones has a superior voice, timing, sense of the music and has SOUL - and can probably sing without tattoos, drugs and alcohol and tantrums. A great album that makes me want to dance (probably not a good idea).

Never used emusic for R&B but came across Sharon Jones in a CMJ sampler. Great sound with a great energy.

First of all, this woman puts on an amazing concert. Secondly, her records keep up the energy with some great retro tunes.

They Say All Media Guide

Following up her excellent 2002 debut, Sharon Jones stays true to the formula she laid down on her early releases and Dap Dippin’ by presenting another session of full-force funk that pays homage to the genre’s glory years without coming off as contrived. The deep funk revival continues with Jones belting out commanding vocal performances that are uncompromisingly forceful yet full of rich, soulful emotion. It’s a session worthy of being found in any beat-miner’s record collection and any funk enthusiast’s basket of obscurities and rarities. Her cover of “This Land Is Your Land” is equally as impressive, as she somehow takes the song from being an American folk standard and turns it into a full-on sonic explosion. Fans of her earlier work will no doubt find great joy in this follow-up, and those seeking Jones out for the first time certainly will not be disappointed in what they find. – Rob Theakston
