Breathless and Speechless

jwfilms

I can honestly say that Michael Tilson Thomas's recording with the San Francisco Symphony performing Mahler's glorious Fourth Symphony is among the most perfect recordings I have ever owned. Not just is the interpretation meticulous yet organic from the fabulous MTT, but the QUALITY of the performance is beyond belief. Indeed, this recording is simply breath-taking. The orchestra draws such powerful emotion from Mahler's gorgeous composition, bringing all of the innocence and all of the fears and all of the sadness and all of the beauty out in just the right way. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this album; listening to it has been transcendental. If you would like to hear what Heaven sounds like, download this recording. And you will hear what I mean. This album is closer to my heart than almost any other that I own, and if you open your heart to it, you will never want to close it to Mahler's music again.

Aptly beautiful and involving

SpinyNorman

One might expect the fourth to suit MTT, and so it does, in abundance. The playing itself is most beautiful, but in this work that counts for more than it might in some of the other symphonies. The reading is involving and spontaneous throughout, and the soloist in the last movement (the mood of which is very well judged) is characterful without becoming operatic. The sound is also one of the best in this series, full, detailed and spacious without any acoustical problems
