A collection that navigates the space between no-nonsense Frankfurt techno and the syncopated rhythms of Cuba and Brazil.
2006 | Label: Frisbee Tracks / Believe Digital

Ricardo Villalobos 'Salvador collects seven of his early tracks produced between 1998 and 2001 for the label Frisbee Tracks. At the time, the future superstar DJ and former percussion student was living in Frankfurt and beginning to gig abroad; the album finds him navigating the space between no-nonsense Frankfurt techno, marked by machinic timbres and a hint of trance, and the syncopated rhythms he had studied in Cuba and Brazil. Nothing here is quite as convoluted as Alcachofa, but you can hear hints of his current style in the dusky undulations of "Que Belle Epoque 2006."

Excellent

This is some of Villalobos' earlier material, culled from early singles. It may not have the same vibe as his more recent releases, but it is excellent in its own right.

I know, it's completely snotty for somebody to say 'well this ones okaaayy, but you should really start with thiiis one..." but that's what I'm going to do. If you got turned on to Villalobos b/c of Alcachofa or The Au Harem du Archemedes or the outstanding Fitzheuer Zieheuer (none of which are available on eMusic!), this album will be a totally pleasant but non-mind-blowing listen. If you're totally new to the guy, go get one of the aforementioned albums, because each of those are...

Scene: Berlin Techno, 2000s

By philip sherburne

Berlin couldn't have turned out more remarkably had Italo Calvino merely imagined it as one of the improbable burghs of his book Invisible Cities. When the wall that divided it for 28 years finally came down in 1989, Berlin underwent an anarchic renaissance that has left it unlike any other western capital. Reunification gave the world a city full of empty buildings and abandoned lots but almost no industry - just politics and culture, pent-up energy… more »

They Say All Media Guide

After an onslaught of singles and full-lengths — culminating in the 40-minute epic Fizheuer Zieheuer in 2006 — it was only a matter of time before an audience would be scrambling for Ricardo Villalobos’ early works and paying premium prices on eBay. This compilation captures his finest moments from that first batch of minimal tracks from 1998 to 2001 originally issued on Frankfurt, Germany’s Frisbee Tracks imprint, as well as a Villalobos remix of SeƱor Coconut released on Multicolor Recordings in 2002. These tracks, while not far removed from the epic percussive jams that would become the hallmark of his full-length albums, are extremely straightforward in comparison. They’re dancefloor-friendly and at points even foreshadow the brilliance of his anthems “Easy Lee” and “Dexter” from his 2003 Alcachofa release for Playhouse. Having caught the attention of such DJs as Richie Hawtin and Dan Bell — who both became instant champions of Villalobos before starting their minimal love commune together in Berlin, the European techno capital of the decade — these tunes made Villalobos a staple of every minimal techno DJ set and spawned thousands of imitators. – Rob Theakston
