Fun klezmer, if a little shallow

Trickyhipster

While this is fun sounding klezmer music, especially if you just need some background music for a Chanukkah party, a closer listen to the lyrics, on the tracks that have them, reveals that Woody Guthrie didn't seem to know much about Channukah, except perhaps how to pronounce it, and how long it lasts. The one-note lyrics tend to get boring after a while. Check out "Happy Joyous Hanukkah," at least - its killer harmonies are the highlight by far, but twelve straight songs of the same gets tiring.

What a treasure

ChasHardy

My most unexpected find yet on eMusic. You can find the details of this project at http://www.woodyguthrie.org/merchandise/klezmatics.htm, so I won't restate here. The Klezmatics seem like the perfect people to realize these lyrics in music. I hear folkiness in the voices that rings true to Woody's history. The tunes and styles really work. The lyrics are mostly delightful. I have no trouble hearing the special writing gift that Woody had in them. I love it!
