Great music; not conducted by Alison McGillivray.

If you search for info on this album, you might find Amazon or other sites saying it's conducted by Alison McGillivray. False. Andrew Manze is the director and violinist. Alison McGillivray is the cellist, who gets top billing because of the cello concerto. This is an amazing album, and I completely agree with this review, which gives it a 10 out of 10: http://www.classicstoday.com/review.asp?ReviewNum=10356 As another review says, this isn't music to start with if you're new to classical music. But if you're interested in the transitional phase between Baroque and Classical, I can't recommend this highly enough.

Boy wonder

It must have been hard to follow a dad like J.S. Bach. But the son shines brightly here, with a light all his own. And Andrew Manze manages to be a profound scholar and a sublime artist simultaneously. Beautiful!

A good recording of some infrequently heard pieces

If you're new to classical music, this isn't where you'd start, but when considering the evolution of the form from Bach through his "significant" followers, Haydn, Mozart, etc., CPE Bach is a significant composer in the chain. This is a good reording of the works. Manze and the English Concert do a superb job as usual.
