For this superior 1997 release, Bob Florence’s Limited Edition performs five of the leader’s originals plus “Emily,” a heated and inventive version of “Straight No Chaser” and Duke Ellington’s “Black and Tan Fantasy.” Florence has been very consistent with his output since the mid-1980′s and this stimulating release (with its many surprises, crowded ensembles and consistent swing) is up to his usual level. Among the key soloists are trumpeters Steve Huffsteter and Carl Saunders, Dick Mitchell and Terry Harrington on tenors and altoist Kim Richmond. – Scott Yanow
