Epic..

I didn't really know what to expect of Mr Soundtracks solo stuff - i'm a fan of Swell Maps, I've a Jowe Head single somewhere and I love the No-Mens tribute releases to the UK diy scene, but I really had no idea about Epic's bizzare little world. In some ways this is the perfect album, but there's a rip in the fabric, little hints of weirdness keep creeping through, and its all the more unsettling because of that wobbly but confident voice. there's a funny kind of sadness, maybe its lonliness, that permeates this recording, but its an essential part of it. Sleeping star is a great record for an autumn afternoon as ice starts to crispen the grass and birds fly away to roost. Put the kettle on, crack open the Digestives and spin this platter..well I like it, anyways.

Sleeping Star is not exactly identical to Epic’s first album, but little has changed. The songs still have that traditional ballad feel; witness “Tonight’s The Night (Rock ‘N’ Roll Lullabye),” a song that borrows heavily from the long history of ballad procedure. Not that any of this is bad. “Emily May” has a rolling piano line and uptempo rhythm that makes it the highlight of the disc… – John Bush
