Ornette's harmolodic lineage.
Bern Nix--along with Charlee Ellerbe--was one of the two guitarists in Ornette Coleman's Prime Time band. Together with electric bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, they created the funky, dense, textural underpinnings over which Ornette soars. I am a guitarist but, quite frankly, the very idea of solo guitar albums makes me yawn. Not so with this recording...the odd chord voicings and angular delivery completely hold my interest. "Objects of Correlation" and "Low Barometer" are high points of this album--funky, strange, with a slight bebop influence shining through. Fans should also check out Nix in a trio setting--1993's excellent "Alarms and Excursions" on New World Records is definitely worth the search.
