Probably Hypocrisy's best album all around, but I don't have all of them yet so I'll have to reserve final judgment. As the name suggests, 'The Final Chapter' was intended at the time to be the end of the band, and it seems the pressure to go out on a high note was beneficial. Peter's vocals go from serviceable death growls to his distinctively piercing black metal shriek to his lost and forlorn singing voice. His riffs here are simple in a good way; memorable, crushing grooves with an icy atmosphere. These songs are constructed according to traditional 80's heavy metal songcraft, but make use of the subsequent developments in the metal world since then--the demonic vocals, improved production, sci-fi themes etc. It makes a big difference when this sort of monstrously-heavy, ugly, very LIVE sound is captured by someone who knows their way around the studio. Basically this a near-perfect combination of many of the things I love most about metal. (FYI, 'Evil Invaders' is a Razor cover.)
