Two Great Talents: One Terrible Album
In our pantheon of musical gods, few rank as highly as Jarreau and Benson. Jarreau is a vocal acrobat with warmth and style. Perhaps the most underrated r&b vocalist there is, Benson is also known to play a little guitar. His "20/20" album (1984) is one of the all-time greats: infusing soul and pop with synthesized sounds that no one had ever heard before. Getting these two journeymen together was an idea of genius. So how did that parlay itself into this train wreck? This is a lot of "smooth jazz" territory; the new name for what has come to replace elevator music. Everything is very middle of the road on this musical outing. What seems to be lacking here is a producer that can match the level of the vocalists; finding strong material, pushing their limits, not letting them rest on some signature tricks and bad habits. Ditch this and download the previously mentioned Benson album along with with Al's self-titled album "Jarreau". - Joher Coleman @ http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0403825/
