This Band Is Always Worth A Listen
While I agree with "gomad361" (whose reviews are generally informed and well thought out) that Bembeya Jazz music from the 60's and 70's is truly deserving of the word "classic," I would not dismiss their more recent material as "slick and over-produced." If the 2002 release titled "Bembeya" (c'mon E Music, let's have that one) was my introduction to this superb group I would have been just as enchanted as I was when I first heard the older material. Production technology has obviously changed in the 46 years this band has been around, and people discovering the modern popular music of Guinea and Mali won't necessarily be put off by a more contemporary sound. If you are coming to this music for the first time, I recommend sifting through all the Bembeya offerings on this site and downloading selectively. My favourite--also on E Music--is Hommage a Demba Camara. His haunting vocals are what first drew me to Bembeya Jazz.
