Jeremy Enigk, World Waits
Label: Reincarnate Music

World Waits, the shockingly straight new album from Jeremy Enigk, is the first record from the former Sunny Day Real Estate frontman in more than ten years. Time has clearly softened Enigk's edges, the jagged quirks that made Return of the Frog Queen such an idiosyncratic landmark now dulled to singer-songwriter acoustic guitars in opposition to all that SDRE's Diary stood for. But still, there are flashes of the Enigk of old — particularly an emotional rawness unique to him — and his loyal followers will find plenty to love.

Re: Amelia's Review

pyxis

I am just now getting into his solo stuff (something I've always meant to check out), but unless the tracks on emusic are mixed up, It seems that Amelia's review is describing the recordings on 'The Missing Link'...because that's the only deviation to 'singer songwriter' style that I've noticed. Contrary to her review, 'World Waits' is very atmospheric (despite stripped down versions of some of the songs on different CDs), but I would agree with her if she's describing 'Missing Link'. Like I said before, maybe the recordings are mixed up on emusic? As I'm a Jeremy-solo noob, I can't say for sure.

Sobering

Captures the carefully crafted melancholy that Enigk is known for. Check out "Damien Dreams".

It's Great

haikuluke

It gives me faith in people being able to actually sing, and to make music that matters to them. It makes it matter to me!

One of my tops for 2008

fulofunk

This is one of those records that I search for every month, but only find once or twice. This is one of those records that I played everyday for 2 weeks and carried the tunes in my head around the clock. This is one of those records that I found by accident, searching thru the Spiritual genre (glad to see it has been re-"genre"ed because this is a record that should have a chance to be listened to by a much wider audience. I hope there is more to come

I put up a hand for 'Better than the Frog Queen'

cowboomie

This is my favorite Jeremy Enigk project and I have them all. This album is incredibly solid and there are songs on this one that are simply powerful, achingly plaintive and lyrically furtive -- even though it's clear what Jeremy is singing about, he does so without becoming pandering in his lyrics. Of all of Jeremy's projects this is his most mature work, imho. It also grows on you and the more you listen to it, the more it seems to unmask both its beauty and its pathos. An incredible work. Thank you, Jeremy. Great stuff.

SDRE Grows Up!

Groovesmith

I was introduced to SDRE about 8 years ago or so with "How it feels..." and I've followed them loosly since. Can't say i'm a rabid fan but this album certainly is a much more mature, grown up Jeremy. I'm digging it. I like that the vocals don't seem overdone (like SDRE often). Great recommendation for your emo days!

It's Good

bigdex

It's no Frog Queen, but it's as good or better than the Fire Theft lp, so that's ok in my book. If you're a fan, it's a must have, if you're merely curious, I think you'll still like it. And it'll serve as a great intro to this man's work, dig in!

Go Jeremy

Taconiteboy

I know this is blasphemy to all you emo heads out there, but I really hated the whiny ealry sunny day stuff that made Enigk famous. Yet Sunny Day's last album- Rising Tide was a departure into more classic alternative rock/pop (think YES/Peter Gaberial/Early Genesis). I loved that album, which made The Fire Theft even better for me. So this new album is more of the same great Stuff! Thanks Jeremy!

Way Too Early For Such Harsh Judgment

StuBarnes

First off, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Give Jeremy some true respect and listen to it for a while. Give it a chance to grow on you. I will agree that at first listen it doesn't have the same instant grab that we may be used to with most music today, but I really think to give Jeremy his due respect we should linger on this record for a while and then... then maybe we can judge it fairly. I've listened to it three times through and each time it gets better and better. I want you to look at the credits down there at the bottom of the page. Jeremy bascially did EVERYTHING! Being a musician, I can say that that is quite an accomplishment! So it sounds a little familiar... who cares? Nothing is new under the sun! But Jeremy has created his own record by himself and that is an extreme amount of talent.

They Say All Media Guide

A decade passed since Jeremy Enigk, lead singer of Sunny Day Real Estate and the Fire Theft, released his last solo album, Return of the Frog Queen. And in ten years it’s natural, expected, desired even, that one will mature, that one’s musical tastes and influences may expand or change, so it’s not so strange that Enigk’s sophomore record is not an exact copy of his debut. What is strange, however, is how different it actually is. While Return of the Frog Queen was chamber pop and struck acoustic chords, World Waits is soft arpeggioed electric guitars, sweeping violins, and droning keyboards. Enigk sounds like a mixture of Peter Gabriel, U2, Sarah McLachlan, and a little bit of Elf Power. – Marisa Brown
