Hobex, Enlightened Soul
2007 | Label: Phrex Records / IODA

Most of Hobex's press photos don't give an accurate picture of what the band actually looks like. It may just be accident (they do have a song called “I'm Not Ashamed,” after all), but something tells me there's a conscious decision behind this. I'm guessing it's because they simply want you to focus on the music above all else. And why not? The quartet plays absolutely impeccably arranged and performed soul, funk and r&b tunes inspired by the likes of Al Green and Stevie Wonder. The title track even sounds like it was recorded in a C&W bar in the heart of Oklahoma. Sure, you may have heard this all before, but don't you have room in your life for just one more rock/blues/soul/r&b/country hybrids? We thought so.
