They Say All Media Guide

Cub’s insanely catchy debut Betti-Cola collects the group’s two early EPs Pep and Hot Dog Day, along with another 15 unreleased tracks recorded over the course of three separate 1993 sessions. While the band’s primitive, sweet formula changes little over the duration of the set, the performances grow more assured with each passing track; whether tackling Lisa Marr’s own infectious compositions (highlighted by the idyllic “Motel 6,” the buoyant “My Chinchilla” and the wistful “Someday”) or well-chosen covers (Beat Happening’s “Cast a Shadow,” the Beach Boys’ “Surfer Girl”), Cub’s naive charm is irresistible. – Jason Ankeny
