"Whoa! Are you telling me you guys are doing your fry cutting in house?!"
Label: Comedy Central Records

A century ago, the Lower East Side was filled with Yiddish vaudeville theaters and Jews who couldn't afford to get out. Today, it's the center of the alternative comedy scene and home to a lot of Jews who can barely afford to stay in. With his deadpan observational humor, Barry is a vet of the scene. His voice resonates like smooth jazz, but is betrayed by material that is punk and nasty, "I meet people every summer in New York who tell me they don't like air conditioning. And I guess I see their point, because what is air conditioning? It's just a definite solution to a problem… It's hot in here… click… now it's cool." Barry's targets the minutiae of a gentrified urban landscape: people who complain about Kmart moving to their neighborhood but will overpay for Kmart "vintage" clothes; a woman he met with a soybean tattoo; restaurants which advertise "house cut" fries ("Whoa! Are you telling me you guys are doing your fry cutting in house?!").

So emusic decided to take a hint from reviewers and concatenate! Now you don't have to get your Todd Barry from old Dr. Katz episodes on YouTube! What a dangerous precedent this might set. Like, i was totally into getting that last Yo La Tengo album, if only it was all in, man, like, a couple tracks? Dude, and that new Goldberg Variations CD?

An eMusic Guide To Comedy

By eMusic Editorial Staff

What makes something funny? People will tell you it's timing. That's not the whole truth. Sure, the right moment, a confluence of mishaps and commentary can result in hilarity. But personality is at a premium in comedy. The person behind the timing is as vital as any open manhole or stray banana peel. Luckily, at eMusic, we've got personality by the bundle. Below you'll find a curated collection of some of the funniest folks to… more »

They Say All Media Guide

Medium Energy might be pushing it since the deadpan Todd Barry often sounds like he needs a good poke with a stick, but behind the weary delivery is a sharp, somewhat sick wit. Barry’s act has more than its fair share of filth, but with a delivery that’s the polar opposite of Andrew Dice Clay’s, his sleaze material is a fascinating kind of creepy instead of the usual brash offensiveness. Past the icky toilet humor is Barry’s acerbic observations on everyday life and some hilarious riffing on the music industry that suggests the comedian is well aware of the indie music scene (anyone with an overly analytical music aficionado for a friend will greatly appreciate “Crazy Mixed Tape”). Odd that the track listing flicks by faster than Barry’s pulse, but “odd” is something he wears like a badge. He’s an acquired taste, but for those who enjoy Andy Kaufman-type characters who challenge an audience rather than play to them, Medium Energy will go from endurance test to Top Ten list in about three listens. Comedy albums that demand repeat listens are rare, ones that grow with each listen even rarer. Weird, rewarding, and a funny sort of unsettling. – David Jeffries
