A blurry, fractured, eclectic masterwork from an amorphous Canadian collective.
2005 | Label: Arts & Crafts / IODA

A collective of Canadian musicians gathered around the nucleus of co-founders Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, Broken Social Scene scotch the notion that avant-garde rock must by nature be brooding, ominous and dystopian. Their self-titled album is blurry, eclectic, fractured, misshapen pop arrived at by fuzzy logic. Yet it's imbued with that rarest of commodities in experimental music, a sense of sheer, vitamin joy. Opener "Our Faces Split the Coast in Half" gathers strength and pushes through like a ramshackle tornado of guitar and brass, sweeping the listener up in the process. As with previous too-many-cooks indie collectives like the Blue Aeroplanes, the feeling as a listener that there are so many of Broken Social Scene and only one of you cannot but raise a smile. Tracks like "Major Label Debut" and the hazy, fragmented, perfumed "Bandwidth" are off-key and off kilter, inducing double vision and prism effects. Yet it never feels shambolic or annoying; instead it adds to the bustle, vivacity and anarcho-syndicalist charm of the songs. "Fire Eye'd Boy" bursts like a sofa with ideas, with percussive breaks, deadpan solos and drones hovering in unexpectedly from all angles, while the absolutely beautiful "Swimmers" shimmers with mini-starbursts and… read more »

Love it...

LTB

This album is so much a mix of "we-made-this-track-in-my-basement" and perfected tracks that it's a great example of everything BSS can and will be. Criticisms of the second disc ignore some gems - like "Major Label Debut (Fast)" which is one of my favorite tracks off the entire album. With the depth of talent, and creativity that just bleeds from every song (Fire Eye'd Boy, 7/4 Shoreline), BSS will continue to change the world of music as we know it.

thanks for the 2nd disc...

though, they are the "b-sides" of the album, i always felt like these were more of a moment in time. seems like this set reverts back "feel good lost", where the album proper is a good sequel to "forgot it in people".

An all-time indie rock classic

UtahMan

I have not heard any indie label album better than this one. As good as You Forgot It In People was, this is much better.

Best BSS Album

MrSpandex

At first, I wasn't too big a fan of this one, but it definitely grew on me. Probably my favorite album off emusic, and definitely in my top 5. The samples don't do it justice. If you like BSS, grab it. If you want a sampling, I would grab 7/4 (shoreline), Fire Eye'd Boy, It's All Gonna Break, and probably Ibi Dreams of Pavement. Disc two is all B-sides.

Slammin. Seriously.

WTF is up with the whole BSS Presents series? They need to stop fuckin around and start making more quality albums like this one. At first listen, though, I was non-plussed. Then it grew on me, and soon it became a face melter. Except for that one quasi-disco ass track. That song still annoys me, and I like disco. Too bad Feist is out of the picture...

Perfect Precursor to 'You Forget It In People'

dyoung34

All around awesome album that finds the band formulating the jangly, layered craftsmanship that only gets better on 'You Forget It In People.' Catch them live if you can, it's always a treat no matter how many show up. Absolutely worth 21 credits!!

Very Good Album

Congratulations

I would agree that with each additional listen, you uncover a hidden element of genuius. This can come in the form of an arrangement or a single instrutment's innovative contribution. Broken Social Scene are one of the best bands of this decade and this album only solidifies that opinion for me.

This is definatly my fav. bss album so far. This really shows the bands full potential. "you forget it in people" comes close but i would still have to say this album is better

Brilliantly messy

Mr.RX99

At first listen, BSS's self titled album sounds a bit chaotic and messy, nothing like the genius of You Forgot It In People. However, you'll like it enough to come back for a repeat listen. As you keep returning, you begin to see through to the melodies and intricate interweaving instrumentations that lie within the mix; although the fact that almost everyone is playing on every song can make it difficult to figure out what exactly is going on, it doesn't mean that there isn't something going on. On about your 6th or 7th listen, you'll realize that this album is easily just as good as YFIIP, expanding upon what was created there; there's indie rock, ambient avant-noise, drum machines and electronics, even a bit of rapping. Don't download it and give it a listen- dl it and give it many listens. It's the best way to come to understand and love it.

Moments of greatness among the clutter

rowleyj

There are some great songs on this album, but the jury is still out on whether or not it's a great album. It's a bit too all over the place for me, so we'll see if repeated listens help.

What I Like: Alt-Country & Otherwise

By Scott Taylor, Software Engineer

This station will eventually have programs that fit into "themes" - maybe 3 hours of Train Grooves (!).... but for right now I just wanted to put together of program of music that I like and sort of defines my aesthetic. Most of these tunes feature an acoustic guitar or a southern accent. Some of them have Jenny Lewis. And any chance I get to listen to anything with Emily Haines in it, I do.… more »

Family Tree: Broken Social Scene

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

Broken Social Scene are a mess in the best possible way. There are an almost incalculable number of members. They swarm the stage, bumping into each other, singing and sweating and laughing. They make a ramshackle, yet curiously refined brand of indie rock; it soars, it swoops down low; it gets quiet and then very loud. There are men singing and women singing and it is rarely less than gorgeous. In order to better understand… more »

They Say All Music Guide

In Canada, Broken Social Scene is somewhat of a phenomenon. Since wooing fans and critics alike with their 2003 Juno Award-winning album You Forgot It in People, the band’s peculiar popularity has made them stars. The community that surrounds the 15-member-plus band is a family-like atmosphere with its many Canadian artists and musicians. When listening to Broken Social Scene, you also get the individual sounds of Feist, Stars, Memphis, Metric, and Apostle of Hustle, among others. It’s camaraderie and education combined. The lush dynamic that carries Broken Social Scene’s self-titled third effort is definitely built upon that. The 14-song set is as bright and moving as the band’s previous efforts, but Broken Social Scene holds more charisma, more depth, and surely more complexities. The mix isn’t messy in conventional terms. It’s artistically untidy without production boundaries. Album opener “Our Faces Split the Coast in Half,” which features the Dears’ Murray Lightburn, makes a grand entrance with its polished horn arrangements, tight guitar riffs, and hypnotic harmonies. Additional standouts include indie rock moments such as “7/4 (Shoreline)” and the nervy “Fire Eye’d Boy.” Handclaps and crowd chatter dosie-do with a sharp rock aesthetic on “Windsurfing Nation,” which was the original title. Here, Toronto rapper K-Os and Feist vocally find their way through this majestic cinematic backdrop for one of its finest songs. From here, Broken Social Scene is a simply a rush of mini epics: “Handjobs for the Holidays,” “Superconnected,” and album closer “It’s All Gonna Break” (this could have been a Nada Surf song) showcase how smart, creative, and brilliant this band truly is. Broken Social Scene are more than a collective; they’re an orchestra for both the slacker generation and the literati. [The first pressing of the release includes the seven-track EP To Be You and Me.] – MacKenzie Wilson
