Love it

Ynyr

I don't think the sequence is perfect on this album, but I love every song. If it had come out in 1986, it would be considered one of the essential albums of that decade. As such, and with all these early GBV albums now available on emusic, it plays like the most unbelievable lost classic found at a vintage flea market of the mind.

First album to sound like GBV

Thomas'

Title says it all. The first couple of Guided by Voices records sounded like R.E.M., which isn't a bad thing, just not their sound they would later develop. This album is chock full of good songs. Liar's Tale in particular is one of my top 20 or so GBV songs. Grab that and a few other tracks and then see if you'll like it enough to get the whole thing. It's not as great as their later albums, but it still has its merits.

They Say All Media Guide

Self-Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia is the first Guided by Voices album to sound like a Guided by Voices album. For the first time, the band can be heard using low-fi production to their advantage, such as on the opening track, “The Future Is in Eggs,” on which Pollard’s vocals are blurred like a distorted instrument to complement the track’s bleary mood. The improvement in Pollard’s melodies here is revelatory, and he and the band move beyond their influences, crafting a blueprint of the signature sound that they would develop to increasingly greater success throughout much of the following decade. Highlights include “The Great Blake St. Canoe Race,” the melancholy, harmony-laden “Paper Girl” and the tremolo-heavy ballad, “Liar’s Tale.” – Brian Egan
