Having plowed through a large amount of the post-IDM/glitch/microsound/desktop/cut-up/collage genre (or *whatever* they are calling it these days), Rumpistol stuck out to me like a sore thumb. It is amazing how skillfully and cleanly such a wide and playful variety of musical influences are woven into the evolving, clicky-poppy fabric of this album, how constantly varied and yet strikingly cohesive it manages to be from start to finish. Never does it become swampy or cheaply repetitive. Just when you get to a point in any given track where you're ready to say to yourself "Ok, I've got it," Rumpistol gently threads in some surprising and delightful new sonic detail or subtle layer of melody. Complex and discriminating work that nonetheless remains quite accessible, Rumpistol's delicate artistry puts a great many better-known glitch-style projects to shame. Do yourself a favor and check this out. Another wonderful discovery I may not have made if not for eMusic.
