The third Music for the Spirit volume in the popular series of laid-back world music collections by the Domo label follows the precedent established on previous volumes. Again, there’s a diverse roster of artists — Kitaro, Luis Villegas, Steve Reid, Dave Aggar, Ray Obiedo, Kawang Khechog, and more — and an equally diverse range of musical styles. While the emphasis remains focused on down-tempo world music throughout, songs such as Steve Reid’s “Midnight Rendezvous” head into lively rhythmic territory, while songs such as Dave Eggar’s “Sorrow’s Call” strip away the excess for a sparse, minimal sound. There’s a little bit of everything here, yet as diverse as this collection is, the mood never departs too far from calm, contemplative terrain. – Jason Birchmeier
