One-man Balkan band opens up his studio to his touring group
Label: Ba Da Bing Records / Revolver

On the debut Gulag Orkestar, Beirut leader Zach Condon took Balkan music — which is often performed by as many musicians as possible without collapsing the stage — and boiled it down to a one-man bedroom act. But touring requires that he share the horn and string workload with an eight-piece band, who finally get their studio time on Lon Gisland. The EP is livelier than the mostly stoic debut, replacing the dirge-like anthems with bittersweet lilts (“Elephant Gun”) and driving instrumentals (“My Family's Role in the World Revolution”). It also features a full-band reworking of Gulag's “Scenic World,” with an accordion humanizing the original's electronic bossa nova backbone. In recent interviews, Condon said that his next album will forgo Balkan folk in favor of French cabaret pop. As promising as another round of eastern European studies would have been, the idea of Condon working his wail-and-croon routine over a new batch of appropriated sounds has me even more curious.

Beautiful wall of sound

A friend had suggested Beirut to me and so when this ep was suggested for me on emusic I had to give it a try. Since hearing this version of Elephant Gun 3 or so years ago it has become one of my all time favorite songs.

An excellent EP

SpaceSamurai

Great from rousing start ("Elephant Gun" is such a beautiful song) to booming finish, "Lon Gisland EP" perfectly showcases why Beirut is one of the best bands in the Southwestern U.S. today! Bonus points: The version of "Scenic World" is much better, in my opinion, than on Gulag Orkestar

Elephant Gun hooked me

MarkhamStreet

and I downloaded the rest. Two of the worlds goofiest instruments are coming back into fashion (the Uke and the "Stomach Steinway") and I couldnt be happier! Elephant Gun is reminiscent of "Spanish Dance Troupe" by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - great Welsh band. Id be surprised if they werent an influence. Thanks for the introduction and the great music!

Download this and all their albums now! This is the best shit since, um , the Macarena? No, seriously, it's "ethnic" but it's absolutely fucken awesome. Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. If you're not stuck on "punk" or "metal" or any particular genre of music, you will love this!

Challenging

This EP has me very intrigued by this band. I'm a music freak, as most of us are. I have music on every second of the day that I am awake. Over the course of a month I probably hear a couple of thousand songs. And if one song plays that is so good, so different, so non-formulatic that it makes me STOP what I am doing and REALLY LISTEN, that's a big deal for me. The subsequent listens have been total mind f-cks. I crave music that challenges me. The stuff that keeps music alive... Hats off.

clarification

Elephant Gun is a great song, but the version of Scenic World is worth its weight in gold.

I downloaded the free track and loved it. Then I downloaded the entire EP and discovered Scenic World is my favorite. I've listened to the sample of Scenic World from their album, but it didn't sound as good. If you are wanting to test these guys out. Download this entire EP.

Free track is excellent

Penboy7

Elephant Gun has grown into one of my favorite songs, but the rest don't really stand out.

Lighter than Gulag Orkestar

caiuschen

The free track, Elephant Gun, is my favorite. The instrumentation is less thick than that in Gulag Orkestar, which made this EP more enjoyable for me.

Balkan Bacchanal

By Richard Gehr, eMusic Contributor

One line of thirsty listeners made its way toward kegs of dark beer. Another longer line followed the contours of Upper Manhattan's Good Shepherd School gymnasium toward several tables bearing cheese, sausages, hummus, grape leaves and other meze snacks. And a third, even longer, line of folk dancers snaked through the crowded gym, stepping and kicking hand-in-hand to the fulsome sounds of the Zlatne Uste Balkan Brass Band, hosts of the 24th annual night-long Golden… more »
