Nothing Better, Live

pkfan has it right. I've seen the man live, also at the Zoo, but in other venues with The Teardrops, as well. This is a great live album, and just a small taste of his performances. Slim has gotten healthy in the last two years, and has been a touring machine. His act is on fire, so look for him anywhere you can. Download this for a little taste of the Magic sound.

I have had the privilege of seeing Slim live, in his prime, many times at the Zoo Bar in the Eighties. He is the real deal. He has lived the blues, he can sing the blues, and he can play the blues. Raw Magic! This is a sure bet to download. What are you waiting for?

One of the last of the 1950s Chicago blues performers, Magic Slim lends a strong credibility and power to everything he sings and plays. Anything Can Happen, which was recorded live at the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, CA, features Slim in prime form. His lyrics are mostly pretty basic, as exemplified by the songtitles, and he excels on both guitar (including on an occasional instrumental) and in his powerful vocals. His backup quartet is also excellent, providing a floor for Magic Slim’s flights. All blues collectors should be familiar with Magic Slim and have at least a few of his recordings in their collection. Anything Can Happen is an excellent place for them to start. – Scott Yanow
