They Say All Music Guide

County Records originally released a version of this collection of Appalachian clawhammer banjo players on LP, and it has been expanded for this CD edition. Recorded by Charlie Faurot and others live in the field between 1965 and 1971 (with the exception of Charlie Lowe’s blistering version of “Tater Patch,” which was lifted from an old 78), it provides a wonderful survey of a modal banjo style that has all but vanished in the 21st century due to the pervasive influence of modern bluegrass. Highlights include Lowe’s “Tater Patch,” Oscar Wright’s wise dance reel, “Let Old Drunkards Be,” and Glen Smith’s lovely version of “Sugar Hill.” Some of these names will be familiar to serious fans of old-time music, but for the casual listener, the chiming, modal sound of the banjo sound on these traditional tunes will be revelatory. – Steve Leggett
