The 1st time I heard this bunch was on Austin City Limits.I bought the CD before the credits rolled. Been buying music since 54 and this baby is in my Top 5. The sheer variety, the unique work of the individual artists against the incredible texture that is so uniquely Double Trouble, takes me away. Tedeschi's "In the Garden" seems to be constructed before our very ears against a swelling backdrop that sounds like a gospel/blues take on Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound", and Johnny Lang's "Ground Hog Day" would make Stevie Ray proud. Great stuff from ear to ear.
Being from Austin, I got to experience Stevie Ray and Double Trouble's live sets before they became well known. There is no substitute for the original band, but Layton and Shannon remain as one of the best rhythm sections around. They certainly do a great job for the guest players on this album. "Turn Toward The Mirror" is essentially a reformation of the ARC Angels, another great Austin band. I also especially like Malford Milligan's performance on "Cry Sky" and Susan Tedeschi's performance on "In the Garden". If you like blues-oriented songs, then give "In the Middle of the Night" by Jimmie Vaughan and Lou Ann Barton a listen.
I have to admit we all miss Stevie(I know him through his music only), but this band is a different animal without him you have to look at them that way. This album has some real feel to it otherwise SRR would not have played with these cats! If you want to hear some more great stuff listen to Arch Angels album. If you like rock and roll this is simply put...good s%$t!!
I sure wanted this to be good but it isn't. In fact it's terrible. And you will certainly miss Stevie. The most watered down cliched thing I've heard in ages. Sorry guys.
This is a stellar album. A must have for music fans. Blues fans as well, even more so. Every song is a great one. Do your self a favor and download the whole thing.
