On the heels of their much more subdued L.P. Tripper comes Springer, a wonderfully (thus far) underappreciated E.P. by the Dutch Efterklang. Many comparisons have been made about their music in relation to other bands; most reviewers of Tripper point out the obvious (yet slightly misleading) similarities to Sigur Ros. This may be accurate as far as the L.P. goes, but Springer charts new territory altogether - far more accessible, the E.P. almost exclusively explores the post-rock/pop frontiers (in extremely melodious fashion), all the while maintaining the distinctive Efterklang electronic touch. It is by turns both glitchy and ambient; either way, it is entirely effective. Gone is the spacey, sparse chill of Tripper; Springer instead exudes warmth and familiarity. I entirely expect this album to appeal to a wide audience of diverse listeners amongst many genres, from rock to pop to ambient and electronic. Simply fantastic.
