This is pretty great - a fave of 1993.

This is a really fine and FUN record, at least the first half + "I'm Going to Knock Your Block Off Allstar." OK: 14 years ago, or perhaps 14 years from now, that writer would've been / will be complaining that Superconductor isn't sloppy enough. True, and it isn't buttoned-up indie rock, and it isn't metal, say like RTX is metal: think of hard rock / metal done by the Partridge Family. Superconductor is sloppy because they are (at least at this point) a 13-piece, most of them guitars. (I saw them live once and my complaint was that there was way too much tuning in between songs).

Most of the more metalesque moments on Hit Songs for Girls aren’t particularly convincing — they’re chaotic, sludgy, and largely non-punchy, shooting at some sort of big-rock power without delivering the content to back it. The album hits its high points when post-punky guitar constructions and hooks float out of the mix, underpinning speedy riffing with bashing drums and creating the same compelling rush that emo tends toward. 1996′s Bastardsong seems to find a better synthesis of these two inclinations, and winds up as a much better — if much stranger — record. – Nitsuh Abebe
