"Listen in the dark by yourself," it says in the notes to Nocturbulous Behavior — driving around Detroit on I-94, preferably. That's where the Belleville Three — techno forefathers Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson — "got it" as they listened to the radio while the Electrifying Mojo spun early techno releases and thereby defined a sound. Detroit is exactly where the sound of 2003's Nocturbulous Behaviour comes from too. James Pennington, the Suburban Knight, mixes this Underground Resistance compilation that features more than twenty vintage tracks from the likes of Mad Mike, the Martian, Dark Energy, Andre Holland and the Suburban Knight himself. If you've ever wondered about the dark, otherworldly and unstoppable sound of Detroit techno, this is where to start.
