A soundtrack for a slow-motion apocalypse.
Label: Earache

While Ministry deserve credit for melding industrial and metal, Godflesh gummed up the machine by slowing down the mechanical clamor to an agonizing roar. Fronted by ex-Napalm Death member Justin Broadrick, the band backed its harrowing shouts and droning, deafening riffs with distorted drum machine beats. The band's first full album, Streetcleaner, is a soundtrack for a slow-motion apocalypse — one that changed the lives of a wide range of artists from industrial bands (Pitchshifter, Malhavoc) to nu metal groups (Korn, Limp Bizkit).

Christbait Rising

Glyndwr1969

SWANS reference is spot on. They played a legendary gig in about 1986 at Birmingham's Mermaid club, with most local bands, especially Napalm and Godflesh paying homage to Gira and taking careful notes. For me, Godflesh are the only band who really ever understood what SWANS were doing. 'Christbait Rising' makes me laugh every time I hear Fear Factory - every melody they ever came up with seems hard wired to the first few lines that Broadrick spits out.

their best

Easily one of the best things to come out of the Napalm Death camp, Streetcleaner is just a monster. Broadrick obviously had some serious influence from SWANS, but his music drives and grooves more, instead of just pummeling. But it's heavy as hell, and this album never gets old for me.

Seminal album, seminal band

Moschops

Probably the heaviest album, on emusic a fantastic soundscape from beginning to end, this album showcases the bleak expanse of England in the 80's. If you only buy download one album this year download this

Song Titles Incorrect

tarn.adams

Jan 20, 2008: It seems they've squeezed together the title for Devastor/Mighty Trust Krusher on to one track, leading to all the tracks after that having the wrong name (this is also why the last track is just called "track" instead of Suction). Unless/until they fix it you'll have to repair the names yourself after you download, and be careful of getting the wrong file if you just download one of the songs.

Nothing is heavier than Godflesh

SwellJoe

Streetcleaner is frightening, smart, and deep. I've been listening to this album periodically for fifteen years, and it never gets old. The angry metal on metal guitar sound, combined with the insistent drum machine and sampled beats, and the percussive basslines, makes Godflesh a unique sound, often imitated but never duplicated. Heavier than Ministry (even at their best), more complex than Napalm Death, and musically more interesting than almost anything outside of high art music, you need this record. Add Pure, Slavestate, and the Cold World EP, and you have reached industrial music nirvana.

Awesome from front to back

This is the album that got me into some seriously cool bands like Napalm Death and others. To this day, I can still listen to this one all of the way through and still want to hear it again and again. Not for the faint of heart...
