The undisputed master of Okinawan proto-surf guitar.
Label: Luaka Bop

Shoukichi Kina is the undisputed master of Okinawan proto-surf guitar. Admittedly, this is not exactly a crowded field, but he wears his crown lightly, mixing the casual twang of Dick Dale with the simple authority and ease of Bill Frisell. On much of the album (a collection of some of Kina's best-known tracks), Ry Cooder sits in, adding lovely slide guitar and folk picking, but mostly holding the rhythm together, playing straight man to Kina's wild card. Throughout the proceedings, a troupe of underage Asian cheerleaders chant what sound like alternate-side-of-the-street-parking regulations in squeaky little yelps. As strange as this all sounds, as the novelty wears off, you're left with more than just Oriental party favors; an odd but undeniable beauty kicks in, one that you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else.

Top Five

One of my favorites of all time. It's impossibly infectious and quirky, and if a backing section of yipping Okinawan wives doesn't get you jumping, you'd better stick with being a jerk. This cd makes me want to smash things with drumsticks made of candy! It's so fun! And then towards the end, this beautiful song "Hana" sneaks in. Kina's stuff is hard to find here, though he recorded with Ry Cooder.

if this best of Shoukichi Kina doesn't leave a smile on your face, consider an examination of your cold black heart. Some of the best Okinawa has to offer.

Surf Rock at its Finest

msgatita

I love the energy of this album, the songs will stay in your head for days! It might sound really pop-y at first, but it has enough nuance to stand up to repeat listens. I think Hana No Kajimaya and DonDon Bushi are two of my favorites off the album.

I've been listening to this cd for more than ten years now; it is one of the most entertaining, uplifting, and upbeat albums. It's darn tootin' infectious! You will love it.

Musical bliss from Okinawa

itazura

I class this one among my favorite 10 or 20 albums of all time. Just love the energy and power of Kina's music. If you want to sample the wares first, try tracks 9 and 10, both of which are masterpieces.

Silent-dog-whistle aficionados will relish the relentless female vocalists of Shoukichi Kina’s band. Thank heavens for the balancing testosterone-pumping energy of Shoukichi himself, whose emergence holds back until the third cut to insure a dramatic entrance. And why not? As the intensely engaging songs here prove, Kina is the indisputable godfather of Okinawan pop, the inventor of a genre that combines elements of local folk music, Japanese-style vocals, Western instrumentation, and Kina’s axe, the plucky sanshin banjo — augmented on several cuts by Ry Cooder’s electric guitar. – Bob Tarte
