Cotton candy new wave pop from a Casio ‘n’ drums duo.
2007 | Label: iheartcomix / IODA

I apologize if you spend more time reading this blurb than it takes to listen to a Matt & Kim song. It's not like they give me much choice: their best tracks on their debut album usually clock in at only a little bit over two minutes in length. When you've only got a Casio keyboard and a drum set to your name, though, I guess that's to be expected.

Like a new wave White Stripes (if both players were as untrained as Meg, that is), Matt and Kim hammer out endless variations on a simple template: Matt plinks out four or five notes on his Casio, Kim keeps the beat and little more, sometimes Matt overdubs another keyboard (or is it the same one on a different setting?). Why does this stuff work? I'm pretty much convinced that humans are hardwired for this type of gleefully-stupid-marshmallow-soft pop music. Or maybe it's just me.

Yes, yes, no, no

My two year old LOVES the first track. He demands we play it every time we are in the car. I liked it first, though, obviously. :)

you'll either love this or hate it

I've seen them live a few times, and came away loving them more and more each time. They're kind of like a pair of enthusiastic 11-year olds. You'll either find it precocious and irritating or exuberant and joyful.

Don't Waste a credit on the "bonus" track

I'm a little ticked that I burnt a download on it... It's mostly dead air then the stoned Matt and Kim tell us they're going for donuts. that's great, could that be a free track maybe? Rest of it sounds good

great show

nah2000

Just caught Matt and Kim by accident at South By Southwest in Austin and I had to rush home and download their album. Great, fun, stuff. Not deep, but it's not supposed to be. Makes you smile. Good times.

Good, but...

Fun stuff, but I wish the vocals weren't so whiny.

like Mates of State, except you won't hate them

These guys are what I can imagine would come if you stole Japanther's PBR 40s and replaced them with tall lemonaides with swizzle straws. The other reviewers are right-on in saying you really should catch them live if you are ever in the position to, the album doesn't quite do their live show justice. Worth a download anyway though, you'll just have to listen and picture Matt and Kim having just as much fun on stage as all the dancing hipsters in the crowd (and then thanking everyone profusely for having so much fun).

The Happiest Sounds You'll Ever Hear

toosday

When you watch Matt and Kim's videos or see them live, you can't help but enjoy yourself. The sound is so upbeat and the duo is incredibly full-of-energy. (The never stop smiling!) That feeling translates very well into this album. It's so much fun!

see em live

these kids are so irresistibly precious live. Neither one of them stops smiling through the entire show, and they have so much energy and fun on stage. and, kim seriously wails on that kit (even if she gets a little off-tempo sometimes). they're great on the cd, but twice as good in concert.

I love that Brooklyn sound.

If you like Japanther, you will love Matt and Kim. Simple beats, toe stompin drums, and a sound you could easily drink a Miller High Life and dance to are enough to get me hooked. There was a nice write-up in the latest Spin mag about this pair. Seeing Kim on drums is something I must see live. This band is just plain fun.

Although I came across these guys by accident, I have to say I am pleasantly suprised. Not only do I seriously dig chick drummers in general, but they definitely have an edge setting themselves apart from other (more famous)drum/ lead duos with a garage sound all their own. And I also dig synth. Hooray for me.
