Julia Fischer again produces another winner with her Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, marking her as one of the youngest violin virtuosos of our era. While I still prefer Perlman's interpretation of the work, especially in the last movement's low-register portions, Fischer still manages to impress with her stellar technique and musicality. This is a record well worth it's price.
This is the album that made me a Julia Fischer fan, and now I seek out her recordings and have never been disappointed.

She plays as if possessed and yet I realize that I've employed a hoary cliche but it is apropos. The orchestra plays with equal fire and musicianship under Kreizberg. This young woman possesses rare and great talent which I hope she won't squander away with Pop and Crossover projects for Decca her new label. I have not heard a more perfectly realized mastery of the Tchaikovsky warhorse in many many years. I urge you follow this lady's career very closely because she has tremendous talent coupled with musical discipline and intelligence.
Julia Fischer's violin sound has to be heard by anyone interested in this repertiore. The sound is a sensation - she seems to be a prodigious talent. hearing is believing.
Reviews of the standard repertoire tend to revolve around whether performer X is comparable to performer Y, but the question I must answer is: did I really enjoy Julia Fischer's performance? The answer is yes, this is a warm and exuberant account, avoiding the excessive sentiment you can sometimes get in Tchaikovsky (not Tchaikovsky's fault, it's how posterity has seen him). The other pieces, while not as well known, are as well done.
Not often recorded pieces, this Souvenir, Seranade, and Waltz are wonderful. Tchaikovsky at his haunting best. And Ms. Fischer's concerto is fine. Excellent recording quality. Excellent recording.
I first saw Julia Fischer play in a concert with the SF Symphony (the Sibelius VC) back in 2003. She was 19. Nobody knew who she was, and no one expected much more than the usual flashy young prodigy. By the end, jaws were hanging. It took a moment for the audience to gather itself for what turned into a thunderous ovation. Technically, she's got it all, but what sets Ms. Fischer apart is extraordinary taste and musicianship. Everything serves the music, yet her performances are thrilling. Buy this recording! You can't beat the deal on eMusic (list price for the CD is $19.99).
