Eerie, disembodied and flat-out gorgeous: the tired sounds of Stars of the Lid.
2007 | Label: kranky / Iris

Unfairly lumped into the post-rock camp, Stars of the Lid have made a career out of assembling bits of sound and stitching them together to make sonorous and deeply resonant music.

The duo of Adam Wiltzie and Brian McBride met in Austin where they decided to slow things down amidst of the roar Austin's cacophonous music scene. On …and Their Refinement of the Decline, their latest chapter in the quest for somnambulant immortality, they've hatched eighteen tracks that range from eerie and disembodied to flat-out gorgeous. While the music sounds simple, it's not — the amount of overdubbing in the micro-world of SOTL is truly impressive. Rich washes of deep electronics are comprised of layer upon layer of aural acrylic, contoured by the occasional vocal sample that reminds the listener there's a human element at work; those vocals add a ghostly element as well, like the last voices heard before taking the Ultimate Journey.

No ambitious work would be complete without an epic reach and for SOTL it's “December Hunting for Vegetarian Fuckface.” While the title may evoke images of avant-art pranksters the Residents, the sound is redolent, seeking synesthasia in an almost physical alchemy, deeply felt and performed by Witlzie… read more »

I heard "Articulate Silences Part 1" on a radio station so I looked up this artist to listen to other songs and I'm glad I did. I feel peace within everytime I listen to this album. I love it!!!!

"Mare Mediterraneo"

My wife and I would listen to this while walking along the sea on the Sardinian coast. Someone described this as "New Age Music". I say they have no soul.

Best Lids

I love all their stuff, but "Refinement" is the most satisfying, somehow. Enjoy.

The Best of Their Kind

DaveWeck

This record in particular got me into this style of droney, slow, ambient, peaceful, ultimately trance type of music. It doesn't seem full or full of melodies until you've listened to it several times, but there really are songs and structure and balance and well created parts. Yes, it's sweepy and sleepy and does a great thing putting you in a different place, but it's got a vibe unlike any other record by any other band i've listened to that writes this style of music. All of their records do that. One of those groups I wish I could blank my memory of so I could do it all again.

Excellent

This is certainly their best album, but I feel to fully appreciate it, it's a good idea to listen to some of their others - most notably Tired Sounds (if you're not really familiar with this music). This is "ambient" music like no other -- caught me immediately the first time I heard it and haven't let go. "Refinement" is fairly close to what could be called a masterpiece; it has a depth, maturity and patience that is rarely heard. Orchestral ambient it the best way I'm able to describe it.

Absolutely Beautiful

One of my favorite CD's, I discovered it listening to Dronezone on Soma FM in the ambient section of ITunes radio. "Daughters of Quiet Minds" was my intro to ambient. Not a bad track on the CD, well worth the 12 credit investment. This was another gateway CD that lead me to the members' solo work, especially The Dead Texan, another great download from EMusic.

Listen to it while tired...

If I haven't had enough sleep, I like to put this one on. Allows for some really trippy dreams. (I know this isn't much of a review, but the music does throw a mood.)

eMusic Guide to Kranky Records

By Joe Muggs, eMusic Contributor

Kranky's great skill is escapology; it's practically defined by its ability to evade definition. If there is received wisdom about the Chicago label, it's as a home for abstracted guitars, moody soundscapes and occasionally spiky electronic beats: all very serious, very studious, very intense. Maybe when Bruce Adams and Joel Leoschke founded it in 1993, it could have been pegged as an indie label that tended toward the experimental — but with each release it… more »
