Portugal. The Man, It's Complicated Being A Wizard
Label: Approaching Airballoons / Reincarnate Music

Alaskan band Portugal. The Man answers the titular problem of their newest EP by allowing their hypnotic drum machine-led indie-pop to run in concentric circles. That is until you're rudely awakened along the way by the group's bawdy anthem “Sapphire Magic” and their funky workout, “Gold Magic.” But in between these two minor freak-outs, the group mines the sort of indie bedtime jazz that Bedhead might have made had they employed three samplers or synthesizers, instead of three guitars. Of note: the group has packaged the whole shebang into one song (the title track) or nine individual tracks.

Interesting sound

SCJ

It's like Led Zeppelin crossed with ... Boards of Canada. It's definitely worth hearing a few times; ideally you'd be listening with some attention!

Track #1

Foxymophandlemama

Track #1 is basically the entire album in one track. The rest of the tracks are the same as #1, just broken into individuals. you don't have to have track 1 for a complete album. it was available just the other day, don't know why it's not now.

Another fantastic release

ptolemyclark

Really great stuff from this Alaskan band. Their description of it is ""It's Complicated Being A Wizard" is a seamless 46 minute journey. 23 minutes through the first time and then around again, like a ethereal dream state which intertwines around itself. Repetition is important to the effectiveness of affirmation." I've only given it a few spins, but from what I can tell, the 23 min 1st track is the complete piece as intended, and the remaining tracks are the whole thing over again, except split up into individual tracks/movements.

This beat-based EP is a perfect precursor to their forthcoming album (to be released this summer by Fearless). Its a must buy, John and the guys are spot-on once again as they delve into dream-state like material.
