Excellent performance, great recording
What a passionate performance of these two trios! The musicians play as though their lives depend on it. The recording is great, with a wonderful balance among the instruments. Definitely worth hearing!

This recording of Piano Trio No.1 is OK but Julia Fischer's vibrato can by trying. For the finest recording of this work, download the sainted Robert von Bahr's BIS recording by the Trio Pro Arte and you will also get the best recording of the Smetana Piano Trio as well.
I can't find a single thing Ms. Fischer has on eMusic that I don't love. When it comes to Julia Fischer, it comes down to whether you like the composer, because the performance will be wonderful. (And whoever she plays with always seems to be at their best, which is very much the case here with this Mendelssohn disc.)
Julia Fischer continues to amaze with her impeccable ensemble skills. Her solo virtuosity is second to none (check out her Tchaik). She certainly demonstrates that she "plays well with others" on this disc!
First rate performance and recording. I downloaded these pieces twice from emusic: the Nash Ensemble and the Naxos recording. Both good performances but the piano too recessed for my taste. This is splendid.
Have to agree with Nereffid about the quality of the music - the first movement of No.1 brought Brahms to mind immediately. I think the quality of the playing is outstanding from all three performers. Many happy replays here.
Somewhere along the way I picked up the idea that Mendelssohn is just a bit sentimental and a little shallow, not as deserving of attention as his contemporaries. Fortunately I have seen the error of my ways - maybe I just heard the wrong things to begin with? - and this disc is further confirmation. This is very good music, played with great fire.
