Foldy But Goodie

Ascender

Seriously, if you thought this was Ben Folds younger brother rocking the mic and keys and backed up by the good harmonies and fuzzed out bass of the original BFF line up, you'd be wrong. But only because they're not actually from North Carolina. Heard "Love Song" on The Current and immediately had to check it out. Something hits me in the gut in re: piano based pop songs about lost love, high school and other youth based subjects. Maybe it's because I'm getting older. Maybe it's because they're pretty good. "Track Star" is an album highlight.

Finally, Pop Music That Isn't Insipid

MakeSonyPay

Seymore Saves The World is a top example of pop song craftsmanship. Hailing from Minneapolis, this trio carve catchy hooks out of personal pain and heartbreak. Apart from the band's rare melodic knack of capturing just the right amount of sweet without the saccharin, there is a depth of irony and wit not found in common pop music. Three random favs, 'Love Song', 'Red Wing' and '5/4 Jam'. I had the great good fortune of seeing Seymore Saves The World at their CD release party. They were fantastic and so was the CD. I'm really glad to see their label, Royalty, Etc., has made it available here. If you get a chance go see these guys live.
